Tales from the Road Vol. 4: St. Augustine, Florida
Rolling into the balmy St Augustine (after a pit stop in Tupelo, birthplace of Elvis) we were very aware of nearing the end of our American adventure on tour with Mumford and Sons, and friends. The Floridian heat, beaches, and beautiful 16th century ruins would have fooled lesser theatre makers into thinking they could take a little holiday. We resisted the temptations and forged on, once again delving into the community in search of our final cast of playmates.
Wednesday morning arrived and only one actor… relief came in the form of a clutch of sprightly young college students from nearby Jacksonville. We rehearsed in the Spanish Quarter, under the shade of a 500 year old oak tree. It was a two day intensive introducing these bright young things to the world of immersive theatre. The cast took direction beautifully and flourished over the week.
An excited bunch of actors arrived early on the Friday ready to play with the St Augustinian crowds. Unperturbed by the heat, our actors were triumphant, giving 100% to each performance. The weekend was capped with an electric powder paint fight set off by the boisterous energies of 6 local drummers who came to our rescue at the final hour.
Walking into Mumford and Sons' backstage area covered in paint for the last time, hugging as many untainted friends as we could on the way, we were euphoric, and sad - that was us, wrapped.Reuben will never forget this wonderful adventure. We’d like to thank the amazing Gentlemen of the Road for being such superstars. And to all those actors and makers we’ve met, this experience has changed and informed us- thank you for coming with us on this crazy journey, we learnt so much from you. And to all the wonderful friends we made…Reuben salutes you all.
