Our friends at Hendrick’s asked if we might add a little theatrical zeal to their Carnival of Knowledge, a touring institute with a desire to reawaken the Spirit of Curiosity, delighting in the unique and unusual.
We created characters to host the three day extravaganzas of knowledge for The Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe. Our hosts, the Dean of the Institute and his Assistant were the all seeing, all knowing creatures who ran proceedings. These Masters of Ceremony entertained guests; initiating debate, handling snakes, rewriting their Mills & Boon-esque novels. They gave lectures themselves on The History of Gin and Literature with Hendrick’s Brand Ambassador Duncan McRae. Recitations of Byron could be heard in the corridor outside the Dean’s office as promising students at the Carnival were given private interviews with the Dean.
Our mission with The Carnival of Knowledge is to provide a haven from the humdrum – an oasis of the unusual – and in doing so, to create an unique experience that restores, revives & reawakens our audience’s Spirit of Curiosity.
From the website, artwork, venue, programme and cocktails; to the contributors, fantastical hosts & hostesses [Reuben Feels], impeccable doormen, and world class barkeeps; and finally the tireless Steely/W team and our gracious host, Phil…. with all your help, I think we achieved that mission.
To see our guests tentatively tiptoe through the door, not quite sure what to expect, and then leave us (often hours later), wide-eyed and singing our praises, was a delight to witness; and it’s been a pleasure to work with so many talented & capable people to make it all happen.
